SHILLONG, April 23: The Justice (retd) T. Vaiphei inquiry commission probing the killing of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew wrapped up its hearing on the matter on Friday.
Justice Vaiphei said the matter is now reserved for the preparation of the report.
“I cannot say how many days it will take to prepare the report but I will try to submit the report before the extended deadline, which is May 20,” he said.
During the inquiry of more than six months, 12 witnesses including police personnel and family members of Thangkhiew were examined by the commission.
The commission held more than 20 hearings. It examined several government witnesses including East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, who had led the August 13 operation in Shillong’s Kynton Massar locality.
The probe was ordered on August 16 last year after a public outcry over the death of the former HNLC leader, who was shot by the police in an early morning raid.
As part of the inquiry, Justice Vaiphei visited the victim’s house on February 5.
