SHILLONG, April 26: NEHU vice chancellor, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, has advocated learning of local language for better communication.
Shukla was speaking during a one-day workshop on ‘Teaching and learning of Khasi language for non-Khasi speakers’, which was jointly organised by Khasi and Hindi departments of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The workshop, which was organised with an objective to encourage the use of Khasi language among the faculties and students of the university, was attended by students and research scholars of the university, and students and teachers of the Kendriya Vidyalaya School, NEHU.
Speaking during the workshop, the VC said that after joining the university, he senses a gap between society and the university, between Khasi and non-Khasi students, and between the different tribal students.
Maintaining that it is important to learn the local language to be able to communicate better, the VC said he is trying to learn and communicate in Khasi language.
“Learning the local language will help to develop a healthy relation between student and faculty members,” he said, adding that students will feel better by sharing their views and communicating in the local language.
Meanwhile, Shukla also said that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has emphasised on the need to learn minimum three languages — national, regional and international.
According to him, people will be able to express themselves better by learning the three languages.
Giving an insight to this initiative, NEHU’s Khasi department faculty member, Dr Marbhador Khymdeit, said that the objective of this programme was to help the non-Khasi employees and students learn the Khasi language. Dr Khymdeit said that the non-Khasis who live in or visit the state do not try to communicate in the local language since people here are proficient in English as well.
According to him, it is important that people from other communities should learn the local languages whether its Khasi, Garo or Pnar.
Meanwhile, Dr Khymdeit said that they are trying to work in close coordination with the Hindi department by holding similar workshop for four to five days in the near future. He said that they are also working towards translating few of the Hindi literary works in Khasi and vice versa.
Others present on the occasion include HoD of Khasi department, DRL Nonglait, Padma Shri Prof Badaplin War and senior faculty of Khasi department, Streamlet Dkhar.
