Financial aid for welfare bodies
SHILLONG, April 28: Financial assistance to the tune of Rs 2.6 lakh was extended to eight voluntary institutions by South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai for organising various social and welfare programmes for students, youths and general public for the year 2022. The eight organisations are Society for Empowerment Education & Development (SEED), Jhalupara, Shillong (Rs 50,000); Harijan Community Welfare Society, 29 Cantonment Anjalee Area, Shillong (Rs 50,000); Five Star Club, Mynsain Lumparing, Shillong (Rs 30,000); Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Jhalupara, Shillong (Rs 30,000); Lumparing Women’s Cultural Society, Mynsain, Lumparing, Shillong (Rs 30,000); Muay Thai Association of Meghalaya, Madan Laban, Shillong (Rs 30,000); East Khasi Hills Taxi Welfare Association, Laban Last Stop, Shillong (Rs 20,000); and Symbol of Sneh Society, Rilbong, Shillong (Rs 20,000).
MLA inaugurates internal road
SHILLONG, April 28: A two-kilometre-long internal road was inaugurated by Adviser to the Chief Minister and local legislator, Lambor Malngiang, at Urmasi-U-Joh village, East Khasi Hills, on Thursday. The road was constructed under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund-XXV for the year 2019-20. In his address at the inaugural function, Lambor Malngiang exuded confidence in the road to eliminate the problems of bad road connectivity faced by the people. Thanking the residents for their continued cooperation, Malngiang reminded them that the road is their collective responsibility, while informing the public that the oproject was initially delayed due to COVID-19. Others who were present include Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), NH Shillong Bypass Division, S Lytep, Sordar and members of the Dorbar Shnong among others.
Sensitisation against drug abuse
SHILLONG, April 28: Students were on Thursday sensitised on the ill-effects of drug use during a programme on Nasha-Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan organised by East Khasi Hills District Administration, at Shillong College Higher Secondary Education. According to a statement, the programme was attended by Principal of Shillong College Higher Secondary Education L Pathaw, District Social Welfare Officer N Umdor, Senior Adviser of Voluntary Health Association of Meghalaya (VHAM) E Warjri, among others. While Pathaw exhorted the students to stay away from drugs, Umdor shed light on Nasha-Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. Warjri, on the other hand, said that there are two drop-in centres of VHAM that carter to over 300 users Students were also apprised of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, by founder of Jharna Foundation, Satrupa Bhattacharjee. During the programme, students were also informed on mental healthcare for adolescents.
Prog encourages millet cultivation
SHILLONG, April 28: Farmers on Thursday were encouraged to cultivate millets during an awareness-cum-training programme, organised by ICAR-KVK, Ri-Bhoi, at Kyrdem village as part of the weeklong campaign ‘Kisan Bhagidari Prathmikta Hamari’. According to a statement, farmers were encouraged to cultivate millets for a healthy society. While addressing the gathering, Subject Matter Specialist, Agronomy, Dr Meghna Sarma briefed the farmers about the importance of maize crop and its nutritional value. “She also explained about millet crop which is now widely grown in India,” the statement said. During the programme, maize seeds were also distributed among the farmers.
