SHILLONG, April 29: The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) on Friday decided to ease its non-cooperation movement for one week from May 2 hoping that the state government will give it in writing that it is actively examining its demands.
The federation has threatened that it will launch a more aggressive movement from May 10 if the government remains silent.
“We want the state government to give us in writing that it is actively examining our demands for enhancement of the salaries of the ad hoc teachers by Rs 18,000 besides a 5% increment of salaries every year,” FASTOM general secretary, Andrew Lyngkhoi told reporters.
According to him, the decision to ease the movement was taken after Additional Chief Secretary in-charge of Education, DP Wahlang had assured the federation that he will put up the file of its demands to Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma by Friday.
Lyngkhoi said the teachers have been requested to take classes and perform other assignments.
They will not hesitate to launch an aggressive agitation if there is no response from the government within the deadline, he cautioned.
“The state government should take the responsibility if anything happens after May 10. We are not going to divulge the details since it is going to be a surprise,” Lyngkhoi said.
