SHILLONG, April 30: Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh was surprised by the different categories of schools and their classification in state, and went on to question the logic of previous governments behind such classification.
In Meghalaya, schools are categorised into Government schools, Semi-government, Deficit schools, ad hoc schools, SSA schools, RMSA schools etc.
“I wonder why this difference was made in the first place,” Lyngdoh said, while speaking as the chief guest during the 8th Biennial Conference of All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers’ Association (AMPSTA) in Jaiaw on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, the Speaker said that he had raised the issue with Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui asking the latter to look into the matter.
“I have already reviewed the report submitted by AMPSTA and I can see many of their achievements. But it is shocking to see that there are too many categories of schools in our state,” he said.
He was of the view that even if the schools are to be categorised, there should only be three types — government, semi-government and private schools.
As per the reports, Lyngdoh said, there are over 32,000 teachers in the state — right from the primary, upper primary, secondary to the higher secondary level.
Maintaining that the government considers education as top priority, the Assembly Speaker said that Meghalaya is one of the states in the country, where thousands flock to pursue their education as it is home to a number of renowned educational institutions.
Lyngdoh has urged the teachers’ association in the state to unite under one umbrella to provide the best education to the students.
