TURA/SHILLONG, April 30: Garo Hills continued to bear the brunt of nature’s fury after storms lashed parts of the region and damaged properties on Friday night.
In North Garo Hills, storms caused damage to houses and plantations.
As per locals, the storm, accompanied by hail and rain, lasted for about three hours, causing damage to crops while also mangling tin roofs.
The villages that have been affected villages are Thakurbilla, Borjhora, Fakirmara, Namapara Sarapara, among others.
The storm also took a toll on banana and areca nut plantations with many banana trees cut in halves.
Earlier on April 28, another cyclonic storm caused damage to at least 21 houses, affecting around 65 people.
The affected areas were identified as Chiram Kama, Chiram Aga and Rangolchiring.
An assessment of crop and plantation damage is being undertaken by the NGH district administration.
Gratuitous Relief, in the form of rice, dal, salt and oil, has been provided to the families of those affected as was informed by the deputy commissioner, RP Marak.
Meanwhile, in Gambegre block in West Garo Hills, over 100 houses were damaged during strong winds on Friday night.
Local MLA Saleng Sangma has informed that he has asked the Block Development Officer to provide assistance to the affected people.
Many villages in South West Garo Hills district too suffered due to rain and thunderstorm on Friday night.
Villages falling under Zikzak C&RD Block were the worst hit — several houses were damaged, rooftops blown away, electrical lines were snapped, and roads and horticultural crops were damaged.
