In the dark…
What is compromised when streetlights are installed in a particular locality? — that is what residents of most localities in the city have been asking as streetlights that were recently installed in their neighbourhood have begun showing signs of becoming defunct.
Prior to the recent downpour and conditions associated with inclement weather, of late, the streetlights did a fine job of illuminating the otherwise dark alleys and bylanes.
As rains battered the city and hailstorms lashed some parts too, some of the streetlights began flickering.
On some rare occasions, the streetlights are fixed too, but unfortunately such privileges are not enjoyed by all.
On many late-night car trips in and around various localities of Shillong, the SJ team has observed that the flickering of streetlights has become a common phenomenon.
Now, with these streetlights apparently dying out, how long will the flickering go on to light the way for Shillongites?
A Short Poem
The cool wind swept through;
The power went off.
The dark clouds hovered,
The power went off.
The wires dangled overhead,
The power went off.
The mighty Pines were rocked,
The power went off.
The Heavens opened up,
The power went off.
The earth was moist with rain,
The power went off.
