AITC snubs defection claims

SHILLONG, May 3: AITC Meghalaya in-charge Manas Ranjan Bhunia has dismissed as “gossip” the claims made by some leaders of ruling parties that many leaders of the Mamata Banerjee-headed party are willing to join their fold.
“…in any institution – political party or administration – when there is a new wave or new phase, issues, questions, discussions, perspectives and analysis come your way,” Bhunia said.
He said no MLA of the AITC in Meghalaya is joining any other party.
Reacting to state Congress chief Vincent Pala’s claim that the party has received feelers from some AITC MLAs, Bhunia said, “It’s his statement. I am concerned about my party and I cannot have any serious thoughts on the comments of others.”
Asked if Dr Mukul Sangma will be the Chief Ministerial candidate if the AITC rises to power, he said the decision will be made by the elected representatives. “Let the election be over. Dr Sangma is definitely a tall and important leader. He is a two-time former CM and Charles Pyngrope has been the Speaker. Our party is represented by capable, experienced and efficient personalities and we expect them to deliver the goods to the people of Meghalaya,” Bhunia said.
On statements that things are going to be very difficult for the AITC in Meghalaya, he said, “Aspirations of the people should be fulfilled and reflected by the work of the leaders. Everything is possible. Sincerity, tenacity and experience can move an individual to that goal.”
