SHILLONG, May 4: Border residents’ insecurities have increased in comparison to earlier, feels All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), which on Wednesday accused the NPP-led MDA government of overlooking the agony and insecurity of this section of people.
Opposition Chief Whip George B Lyngdoh alleged that MDA leaders are blowing their own trumpet while making the interstate boundary issue with Assam a political agenda. “We have seen that leaders in the government are taking it as a political agenda of certain leaders and groups and overlooking the agony of the people on the ground,” said Lyngdoh.
Claiming that the issue is already a political agreement of the chief minister, he said that some sections of society said that they will be approaching the court.
Lyngdoh, who has been notably vocal on the issue, said that the insecurity of people now is more than what it was before.
“The government has tried to blow its own trumpet and tried to justify its agreement but it is overlooking the ground reality that people are being deprived, are in agony and more insecure now,” he said.
Asserting that the AITC was the only party to raise the issue in the Assembly registering its objection, Lyngdoh claimed that a lot of ground has been lost to Assam, adding that out of the 36 square kilometres claimed by Meghalaya, 50 per cent has given away to Assam. “We tried to correct them but they did not listen and went ahead,” he added.
Maintaining that the AITC will remain firm on issues like the boundary row, Lyngdoh said that many people have approached the party to fight for them in preventing their areas from going to Assam.
