GNC airs opposition to govt’s stand on present-day issues

TURA, May 6: The Garo National Council (GNC) has aired opposition to the NPP-led MDA Government’s take on Assam-Meghalaya interstate border issue, CUET as well as inflation.
During the GNC’s annual meeting held at Wakagre in Tura, various present-day issues were conferred about following which the Council members unanimously condemned the government’s stand on the same.
Some issues that were taken up during the meeting include the Assam-Meghalaya boundary row, Common University Entrance Test (CUET) and sudden hike in the electricity bill.
With regard to the interstate border issue, the meeting resolved to write a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for an all-party meeting before second round of talks between the two states begins.
With regard to the CUET, the meeting also decided to write to the Centre, seeking exemption of Meghalaya from the all-India entrance test.
The GNC members, during the meeting, also aired opposition to the recent hike in the electricity bill, demanding that the government address the same.
During the meeting, the central executive committee of the GNC was also reconstituted and its office-bearers were elected.
Following the reconstitution, Kalpana Sangma was elected as president, Nikman Ch Marak and Henishyng A Sangma as vice presidents, Augustine R Marak as general secretary, among others.
