SHILLONG, May 6: Political developments within the camp of the saffron brigade will heat up as soon as July sees its way through, according to the State BJP chief, Ernest Mawrie.
“Some MLAs want to join us and I have already made a statement and yes they will not come now due to the anti-defection law but may be later after July,” Mawrie said on Friday, while revealing that four MLAs had sent feelers long time ago.
He, however, avoided disclosing the identities of the four MLAs except that they belonged to different political parties.
Denying reports about the two BJP legislators looking for greener pastures, Mawrie said, “This is not true and we are intact. The party is united and they will contest from BJP ticket only.”
“Some other MLAs were approached by our leaders and if they want to join us the door is always open and they are welcome,” he said.
Mawrie had earlier said that at least five legislators from different parties in Meghalaya are in touch with the BJP.
On reports that one of the party’s general secretaries joining the NPP to contest against senior BJP leader, AL Hek, the party president admitted that he has heard about the matter, stating that there is no concrete information as yet.
Political experts are also of the opinion that in the next couple of months, the state will witness massive changes in political equations.
Suspension of five Congress MLAs, reports of MLAs of regional parties eyeing different platforms to contest from besides speculation about All India Trinamool Congress MLAs looking for a change is the present state of the political scene in the state leading up to the 2023 Assembly polls.
Strengthen party, advises Chuba Ao
On the other hand, BJP Meghalaya in-charge, M Chuba Ao, has advised party leaders to strengthen the party rather than giving political statements.
Admitting that there was infighting within the party for several months, he said, “Giving political statements will not work. There are other parties who can give better political statements but BJP’s vision is to raise the economy of Meghalaya and bring development there,” the party’s Meghalaya in-charge said, adding that the party leaders should come forward and reach out to the people at the grassroots level.
