SHILLONG, May 14: As heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc in Meghalaya, the State PWD (Roads) and the National Highways division is facing the challenge of maintaining surface communication.
Heavy rains and landslides have in the recent past damaged roads in the state, at times cutting off certain vulnerable areas.
During Friday’s rain, the movement of vehicles on the Shillong-Dawki Road was paused following a landslide. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), which is widening the road and other agencies cleared the road quickly.
A small section of the Shillong-Nongstoin Road at Kynshi was submerged for some time. The stranded people had to wait for some time for the water to drain off.
According to reports, the National Highway 6 along the Assam-Meghalaya border was also hit by landslides and vehicular movement was paralysed for some time.
“All the National Highways in the state are now open and there was no major damage to the roads despite landslides and disruptions,” a PWD (Roads) official said.
