Shillong Jottings

Rock-a-bye! A boy uses broken wires tied from a hoarding structure as a swing, at Jhalupara
Cantonment. Dangling wires have been bothering the residents of the area for a long time.

Need a clearer picture!
It is already a herculean task to get a good view of the road and oncoming traffic given the practice of “misusing” headlights in the city, and with rains now, visibility is considerably poor.
So, under these conditions (of course them being mutually exclusive), how does one spot a traffic police personnel’s gesture?
A commuter spoke with the SJ team recently and narrated an incident wherein he was admonished by a cop for apparently not complying with directions seemingly given to him. He contended that he somehow missed the cop’s hand signals, which led to a minor argument.
“The uniform, although looks smart, is navy blue and traffic police personnel (their hand signals) can be difficult to spot, especially during evening hours,” he said.
According to him, if the traffic personnel had worn gloves (white) that day, it would have been easier for him to spot his hand signals.
“I’ve seen cops in other states use gloves. This could be helpful for people like us who drive in the city almost daily without assistance of traffic lights,” he suggested.
Occasionally, traffic personnel have been seen using gloves while on duty.
One can spot them with gloves on when a VVIP visits Shillong, which is a laid-out norm.
If you spot any cop wearing gloves or implement practices that can possibly make your commuting experience better, give them kudos. It may encourage them. What gives!
