SHILLONG, May 18: Suspended Congress MLA from Mawlai, Process T Sawkmie on Wednesday said the state government should not construct the proposed Shillong Medical College in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode but get it funded 100% from the Centre.
He said building the college in PPP mode will be a burden for the state unlike the Tura Medical College, a 100% centrally funded project.
Sawkmie also said it was time for the state government to give shape to the medical college that has been entangled in various issues since 2011-12 when it was conceived.
The medical college is expected to fill a void in terms of quality treatment in Shillong, which has a few government-run and private hospitals besides NEIGRIHMS.
The state government had recently scrapped an agreement with the Kali Pradip Chaudhuri Group, a Kolkata-based firm for the development of the Shillong Medical College in PPP mode.
