SHILLONG, May 18: The state BJP has accused the National People’s Party (NPP) of sparing no effort to destroy the image of the BJP in the state, especially in the Garo Hills region while painting a rosy picture of the ties between the two parties in New Delhi.
The BJP is a minor partner in the NPP-led coalition government in Meghalaya.
“The NPP might be our ally in the government but it is treating the BJP as an opposition party in the Garo Hills, keeping us out of the district council there. We will not keep quiet on this,” state BJP vice-president Bernard Marak said on Wednesday.
Accusing the NPP of playing a double game, he said: “At the Centre, they are saying they are friends of the BJP but on the ground, they are giving a bad name to our party by not implementing the centrally sponsored schemes and not carrying out the orders of the court and National Green Tribunal.”
The NPP was violating every rule, he added.
Marak said the NPP was trying to impose various restrictions on the tribal people and blaming the Centre
although Meghalaya is a Sixth Schedule state exempted from certain regulations.
“The Centre is not doing anything wrong. The NPP is, and blaming the BJP,” he said.
Stating that the BJP will expose the wrongdoings, Marak said: “We are going to take up the issue at the highest level.”
The BJP has been flagging anomalies in the district councils, improper implementation of central schemes and cases of corruption. The friction reached a level where the NPP asked the BJP to leave the coalition if its leaders were unhappy.
