SHILLONG, May 20: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Friday said he, along with his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma, will jointly meet Union Home Minister, Amit Shah to discuss the situation of flood and landslides, triggered by the pre-monsoon rains, and the likely impact and measures to tackle the aftermath.
Sangma said after reviewing the situation, he and Sarma would hold a joint meeting before going to Delhi. He said he recently had a phone conversation with the Assam CM who expressed concern over the disruption in the movement of people and goods to the Barak Valley.
“We also had a video conference. We held a discussion with the deputy commissioners and the department concerned. Necessary action was taken to ensure the passage is clear,” Sangma said.
He said they also discussed how they can face any eventualities. He hoped things will not get worse.
The CM said the DCs were directed to take stock of the situation. He said he will hold a meeting with them and other agencies later this month to review the situation so that all arrangements are made and the state is not caught unawares.
“These are natural calamities which are not in our control but we will do whatever we can to minimise the impact on the citizens of the state as well as the region,” he said.
Allying the fear of escalation of prices of essential commodities, he said, “We give priorities to essential commodities. Instructions have been given to the DCs to ensure that accessibility priority is given to essential commodities.”
