TURA, May 21: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, on Friday reviewed the preparedness of the district against the flood situation arising out of incessant rains.
The DC held a meeting with officials of various line departments, including the District Disaster Management Authority.
Incessant rains across the North East, especially in parts of Assam and Meghalaya for the past two weeks, has triggered apprehensions over possible rise in water levels in the plain belt of the district, mostly under Dadenggre Civil Subdivision, which has been prone to floods.
“The review meeting was to ensure we are prepared for the worst. We have to ensure enough supplies if a flood does hit us. The discussion was on POL, readiness of the teams to respond as well as identification of relief centres,” informed the DC.
The current situation for the plain belt is grim though the situation is yet to get out of control. However, water levels have been steadily rising since the past two weeks. Other parts of Garo Hills too have seen continuous rains for the past two weeks, something that has been extremely unusual for the time of the year.
Meanwhile, locals from the Phulbari area informed that the situation is still not alarming though water has been on the rise.
“The water has been rising for the past few weeks but is still not alarming. However, if it continues for another 2-3 days, the situation could change drastically. We are hoping it does not or we will all be scampering,” informed a local.
