SHILONG, May 21: After the Centre’s move to slash excise duty on fuel to offer the public respite from inflation, the price of petrol in the city has gone down to Rs 95.14/litre while diesel now costs Rs 83.13/litre. The 95-Octane petrol called XP95 costs Rs 99.78/litre.
These rates would be applicable in the city from 0600 hours on Sunday, according to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).
Earlier, a few petrol pump owners told The Shillong Times that the price of petrol here is expected to come down by Rs 9 per litre and diesel by Rs 7 per litre.
One of the petrol pump owners said that such sudden announcement of reduction would bring huge losses for them.
“The way the government increased the prices of petrol by 30 paise, 20 paise per day, the government should have reduced the price in the same way,” the petrol pump owner said. The government on Saturday cut excise duty on petrol by a record Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 per litre to give relief to consumers battering under high fuel prices that has also pushed inflation to a multi-year high.
Announcing the duty cut through tweets, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said the government will give Rs 200 per cylinder subsidy to Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries for 12 cylinders in a year to help ease some of the burden arising from cooking gas rates rising to record levels.
