MAWKYRWAT May 25: In compliance with the order of the High Court of Meghalaya, mining and quarrying of minor minerals without any licence of mining lease has been prohibited in South West Khasi Hills by Deputy Commissioner, C Kharkongor.
The DC has directed all such activities of quarrying/mining in the district to immediately stop.
Earlier, the High Court had observed that it was a matter of great regret that orders passed by the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal for cracking down on illegal coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya.
The Court’s ire was the result of a report filed by Justice (retd) BP Katakey before the HC on non-compliance of the directions issued by the SC and NGT.
