SHILLONG, May 29: The Environment Coordination Committee (ECC) of Elaka Sutnga in East Jaintia Hills has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma demanding that 29 coke plants, operating illegally under the Elaka, are dismantled.
In a letter submitted to Sangma recently, ECC general secretary, Pynbait Sutnga said RTI information received from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board revealed their illegal operation.
“We urge you to pass necessary order for dismantling the 29 coke plants,” Sutnga had written in the letter.
He said in the counter affidavit filed before the National Green Tribunal, Eastern Zone, Kolkata, on January 28 this year, the pollution board had stated that the 29 units were denied consent by the Consent Committee.
The ECC general secretary said these units have to go as there is no room for legalising them.
“…I would like to request your office to kindly take immediate action and pass necessary order in this regard that may direct the owners or proprietors of the 29 units to dismantle their respective units within three months,” he said.
