SHILLONG, June 6: Exhibiting genuine concern for nature, the Syiem of Hima Sohra, Paiem Freeman Sing Syiem, on Sunday handed over two acres of land to Clean Sohra Campaign (CSC) for the purpose of setting up Waste Recovery Centre at Sohra.
The Syiem handed over the official letter on allocation of the land to chairman of the campaign, Allan West Kharkongor, during a function to celebrate World Environment Day at Ing Dorbar Mawkdok on Sunday.
The task of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the waste recovery centre has been given to experts, which will be forwarded to a partner agency for funding.
“With this, we expect to introduce a proper collection, segregation and safe disposal of waste generated from different localities within Sohra,” Kharkongor said on Monday
The CSC chairman highlighted that in the absence of a proper waste management system, garbage is currently being openly dumped on hilltops, rivers and caves in Sohra.
On the same day, the Syiem of Sohra flagged off the Royal Enfield bike rally from Mawkdok where a clean-up drive called ‘Leave Every Place Better’ was conducted as part of a nationwide cleaning drive by the Royal Enfield (Eicher Foundation) in 39 location across India.
The clean-up drive was organised in collaboration with Clean Sohra Campaign and Hima Sohra.
Besides the Royal Enfield riders from RERAM and PNAR Bull, NCC cadets from Ramakrishna Mission also took part in the drive.
In spite of heavy rain, the volunteers exhibited enthusiasm in the activities during the programme at Sohra.
