Lesser-known schools shine with top ranks

SHILLONG, June 10: The results of SSLC and HSSLC (Arts) exams, conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE), were declared on Friday with five SSLC candidates from lesser-known and non-recognised or private institutions featuring among the toppers.
The top position in the SSLC exams was shared by Amebaaihunsa Kharbhih of St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Marbisu and Arghadeep Saha of Woodland Secondary School, Dalu (a private institute). Both secured 575 marks.
The four other candidates from private institutes making it to the Top 20 list include Iainehskhem Lyndem of Ramakrishna Mission Secondary School, Mawmluh; Biambong M Sangma of Woodland Secondary School, Dalu (both 11th rank); Sohan Thapa of New Era Secondary School, Mawsmai (15th rank); and Tofany Suchiang of Shangpung government upgraded & RMSA (19th rank).
The 2nd position was shared by Menangmankhraw Kharkongor of St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School and Rilaakor Lamare of Auxillium Girls Hr Sec School, Shillong (569 marks). The 3rd position went to Arghadeep Ghosh of Sherwood School, Tura (568 marks). (See P-4 for full merit lists)
The SSLC pass percentage was 56.96, up by 4.06 from last year’s 52.9. Altogether 57,371 candidates had appeared for the examination and 32,678 cleared it.
East Jaintia Hills recorded the highest pass percentage of 82.36, followed by West Jaintia Hills (77.51) and East Khasi Hills (75.05). Surprisingly, none of the five districts in the Garo Hills had a pass percentage in excess of 42. The West Garo Hills district had the best pass percentage (41.1) among the five districts.
In the HSSLC (Arts), Ramyank Nilabh Chakraborty of Don Bosco College (Hr Sec section), Tura secured the top rank with 460 marks.
The 2nd and 3rd positions went to Bahunlang Mawrie of Auxillium Girls Hr Sec School, Shillong (450 marks) and Vijay Adhikari of St. Anthony’s Hr Sec School (436 marks) respectively.
The pass percentage was an impressive 81.17. Of the 22,711 candidates, 18,434 cleared the exam.
Eastern West Khasi Hills – the state’s newest district – had the highest pass percentage (96.25), followed by East Khasi Hills (91.09).
The MBoSE lauded the students for their excellence despite the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic.
“In spite of COVID, teachers, parents and students worked hard as they understand that working hard is the only way to be successful in exams,” MBOSE Joint Director, Macdonald Marbaniang said.
On the five private candidates making it to the SSLC merit list, he said these institutions are not affiliated to the MBOSE and the Board wants them to apply for affiliation. He said it will follow the due procedures to grant them affiliation.
Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma congratulated the students.
“Many congratulations to the students who passed with flying colours in the SSLC and HSSLC (Arts stream) MBOSE examinations. May you soar high in the direction of your dreams and may you achieve great things in the future!” the CM said.
Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui also congratulated the students. He expressed happiness that the pass percentage was the highest in the last five years.
“Congratulations to the students who passed their SSLC & HSSLC exams. To the rank holders, continue to work hard. Those who didn’t meet their expectations, continue to aspire for success. Glad that the pass percentage is the highest in the last 5 years,” Rymbui said.
