SHILLONG, June 13: The city will reverberate with voices that will exhibit the plight of domestic workers and the clamour for its redressal during a rally which will be taken out to commemorate International Domestic Workers’ Day on Thursday.
The rally, which will commence from Fire Brigade and culminate at Malki ground, aims to protest against the state government for its apathy in fixing their wage and holidays.
According to the joint secretary of All Meghalaya Domestic Workers’ Union (AMDWU), Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew, there has to be uniformity in the rate of remuneration paid to workers considering the rise in prices of essential commodities, rent etc.
Informing that the union came up with a wage card in 2018 to bring about a uniform wage rate, Kharsyntiew said that the union will publish the revised wage card rate on June 16.
She has also appealed to the employers to allow the domestic workers to take part in the rally.
