Meritorious athletes from EJH feted

SHILLONG, June 15: As many as 44 winners from East Jaintia Hills who have won medals in the recently held Meghalaya Games, besides a total of 18 winners from State level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2022, were felicitated and awarded cash prizes during a programme on Tuesday.
The programme was organised by the office of the District Sports Officer along with the District Sports Promotion Society.
The Meghalaya Games athletes were awarded Rs 5,500, Rs 3,300 and Rs 1,700 for winning gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
Similarly, winners of the state-level Inter-School Athletics Meet were given Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 for winning the gold, silver and bronze respectively.
To encourage athletes, the ‘Sponsor-An-Athlete’ programme was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner’s office under which different organisations, industries, government companies, institutions, philanthropists will be encouraged to sponsor preparation of a particular athlete.
A total of 15 sponsorships were declared during the programme including from NETC, local MLA Kyrmen Shylla, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa etc.
Chief Guest Kyrmen Shylla announced Rs 5 lakh as assistance to the District Sports Office for purchase of sports gears/equipment for the different athletes across the district.
