Woman killed due to landslide

Mawkyrwat, June 16:  One woman from Jashiar village, 10 KMs from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills District died on the spot after a major landslide triggered by heavy rain washed her along with the kitchen of her hut down a gorge.

Fortunately, her two minor children escaped unhurt as they were in the bed room of the house while the incident occurred at around 11:45 pm last night. There has been incessant rainfall in the area more than a week.

Local people promptly dug out the woman by blocking the flow of water and rushed her to Mawkyrwat CHC for treatment. However, the victim Heal Sentimerry Myrthong (24) was declared brought dead by the doctor in the CHC.

Teilanglin Lyngkhoi, a neighbour who stood witness to the incident informed that victim was cooking a meal for her two minor children, Alfydary Marweiñ (6) and Nafy Marweiñ (4) who were playing in the bedroom at that time.
