Guwahati, June 23 : The Assam education department has, in the wake of the severe flood situation in the state, preponed the commencement of summer vacation in all elementary, secondary, senior secondary and higher secondary schools to June 25 instead of July 1.

State education minister Ranoj Pegu on Thursday said that summer vacations of schools in the state had been preponed and would now commence from June 25 (to July 25) instead of July 1 to 31, in view of the severe flood situation across the state.

The minister further urged the private institutions to adhere to the same schedule, keeping in mind the convenience of the students and teachers.

The secondary education department on Thursday also issued a notification in this regard stating that the decision to reschedule the summer vacation has been taken as “many schools in the state are being designated as relief camps, while a large number of schools are also affected and damaged due to floods, resulting in closure and causing academic loss.”

According to a report circulated by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority on Thursday morning, over 54 lakh people across 32 districts remained affected by the deluge till Wednesday evening.

The death toll in the first wave of floods since April this year till Wednesday has risen to 100.
