SHILLONG, June 24: The state Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday warned the autonomous district councils to mend their ways and respond to the state government with necessary documents to avoid the risk of financial embargo.
“If they don’t mend their ways and fail to respond to the state government on the financial lapses with all necessary documents, they are going to face immense problems and a time will come when the central government will initiate action and stop all funding,” State BJP president Ernest Mawrie cautioned.
He was referring to the delay by the GHADC and the JHADC in replying to the state government on the findings of the audit report of misutilisation of central funds as was alleged by the BJP backed with RTI findings.
Talking about the KHADC facing relentless pressure over gross financial irregularities and missing accounts of expenditure and cornered by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and deciding to appoint a chartered accountant (CA) who will probe the irregularities in the council’s financial accounts, he said, “They want to reply through a chartered accountant which I do not agree to. It is the duty of the secretary of the council to prepare all the papers with the guidance of the CEM.”
On the direction of the state government to the JHADC and KHADC to close down all illegal toll gates, Mawrie said it should not remain as a mere order but should be implemented in letter and spirit.
