BAGHMARA, June 29: Various NGOs of the town of Baghmara will begin a sit-in demonstration in front of the Baghmara Civil Hospital seeking the fulfilment of various demands of the region.
The sit-in demonstration will be led by the GSU, ADE, GSMC, FKJGP, AHAM and AYWO of South Garo Hills (SGH) district.
The NGOs will begin their two day protest from 10 AM of Thursday till 5 pm before restarting the agitation the next day.
The NGOs stated that the condition of the hospital was not only dilapidated but also unhygienic and these had to be upgraded to ensure better functionality.
Further, the NGOs also demanded the appointment of a paediatrician and a gynaecologist besides filling up of other vacancies in the institution.
“Repair of the roof top which is in a pathetic state needs to be undertaken immediately. The overall hygiene of the toilets as well as rooms is unimaginable and this too needs to be rectified. The hospital services the entire district and has to be kept fully functional, with all vacancies being filled up,” said GSU president, Southern Zone, Chuang H Sangma.
From videos and photos available with The Shillong Times, the site of the toilets and wash basins are mostly soiled while walls in the various wards have peeled off. The site itself looks like a place that needs an immediate brush up.
“How can patients be managed in such a dirty environment? Our agitation is to seek a change to this situation and we will continue protesting in various forms till it is done,” added Chuang.
