SHILLONG, June 30: Police have arrested six drug traffickers from different locations on Wednesday and seized around 600 grams of heroin besides 30 strips of Nitrazepam tablet.
Meghalaya Police personnel were acting on specific inputs about the movement of suspected contraband earlier.
According to their intel, a drug peddler was proceeding from Manipur to Shillong via Silchar, carrying suspected illegal contraband. The police, accordingly, checked all the vehicles coming from Silchar towards Shillong in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills.
Around 3.50 am, police intercepted a bus (ML-05-L-7887) and recovered 676 grams of heroin from their possession and 30 strips of Nitrazepam tablets. Two persons, who occupied the bus, were arrested.
After preliminary examination, the suspects revealed the whereabouts of the prime financier of the illegal contraband, and told the police that he was waiting to receive the consignment at Mawryngkneng.
A police team was dispatched to Mawryngkneng, where the person and three of his associates were intercepted, all of whom who were subsequently detained.
In light of these developments, Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi asserted that the police will continue its operations till the menace of drugs in Meghalaya is eradicated.
The DGP, while addressing a press conference, said a mobile app will soon be launched which would enable people to share inputs related to drugs, while emphasising that the confidentiality of the person will be maintained.
According to him, the arrested individuals are repeated offenders and drug addicts themselves.
The DGP also felicitated 36 police personnel involved in the operation with the DGP Commendation Certificate and cash prize.
With this seizure, Meghalaya Police has saved around 1,500 youths in Shillong from drugs.
Stating that the kingpins of the drug racket are operating from Myanmar and Manipur, the DGP said until and unless the middle-level traffickers are not caught by the police, it is difficult to reach kingpins.
Asked if there is any involvement of police personnel in the racket, DGP Bishnoi said that there has been no such complaint till now but assured that police will take strictest of action against such personnel, if their connivance is established.
Stating that Meghalaya is both a transit as well as a destination state for contraband items, the DGP said online sale and purchase of drugs cannot be ruled out and the cyber cell is keeping a close watch on such activities, while adding that even officers have been trained for dark net training.
