Rotary holds plantation drive in Mairang

SHILLONG, July 1: Marking the beginning of the new Rotary Year 2022-23, Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong on Friday planted 100 plum saplings in Mairang. According to a statement, the programme titled ‘Thung Dieng: For a Green & Sustainable Future’ was attended by district officials. Eastern West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Wilfred Nongsiej, who was the chief guest during the programme, advocated collaborative efforts to safeguard the greenery and natural resources in Mairang. Expressing gratitude to the Club, the DC assured that the planted saplings will be taken care of. Prof. Devesh Walia, who took charge as the president of the Club on the same day, thanked the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for its support towards the green initiative. He also said that it is high time that people pledge for a sustainable future.

Forum alleges improper functioning of nursing centre
TURA, July 1: The Constitutional Rights’ Forum (CRF) on Friday alleged improper functioning of the recently constructed Nursing Training Centre at Baghmara in South Garo Hills as well as the non-compliance with an agreement made with the landowner before the centre was constructed. In a memorandum to the DHS (MI), president of the Forum Greneth M Sangma said that while offline classes are being conducted in other institutes, the nursing centre in Baghmara continues to take online classes. Greneth also alleged that the nursing centre has remained closed since May 16. With regard to the non-compliance with an agreement, the Forum president said that the department is yet to fulfil the conditions made in the agreement with the landowner prior to the construction of the nursing centre. Greneth said that according to the agreement, a family member of the landowner was to be provided employment in grade III or grade IV posts in case the land was given free of cost to the department.

Rari residents clarify on
‘electricity crisis’
TURA, July 1: Residents of Rari in North Garo Hills (NGH) on Friday clarified that they had not made a complaint through any form of press releases over the electricity situation in their village, while adding that they were working with all concerned to resolve the matter. Earlier, an independent investigation into the situation revealed nearby Bajengdoba (Kosi Chora) and Rari remaining without electricity for over a month, reportedly due to their transformers becoming faulty. The villagers, through their clarification, also informed that they were working with the department to ensure dues were cleared and did not want to pin the blame on anyone. They also reported that an amount of just over Rs 94,6436 was due to the department instead of the amount of Rs 11 lakh as reported. “We also want to state that out of a total of 63 consumers, 37 consumers have cleared their outstanding bills and we are still trying to encourage others to clear all the dues at the earliest. In the end, if required, we will request the department to look into the matter to restore the transformer as early as possible to bring back normal life to the villagers,” they added.

Greenery drive in Nongpoh
NONGPOH, July 1: To bring back the greenery and beauty of Nongpoh, the proprietors of Jiva Veg Restaurant and Lc Woodland Dhaba on Friday took the initiative to plant trees along a stretch of the National Highway 6 from Mawdiangum village to Umlyngkdait in Ri Bhoi District. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the village Durbars of Mawdiangum and Umlyngkdait, also took part in the initiative. Speaking to media persons after the plantation drive, Lc Woodland Dhaba owner Jo Nongrum and Jiva Veg Restaurant owner Jiwat Vaswani said that the initiative was to save the environment and at the same time to make Nongpoh look greener and more attractive to commuters.
