SHILLONG, July 4: The state government is planning to form an Education Commission to look into the issues dogging the education sector in the state.
“We are considering constituting a body or commission that would look into the concerns and issues in the education sector,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters here on Monday.
He said this initiative was necessary to improve the state’s education system.
Asked if the state government will take action against the school managing committees not taking action against the agitating teachers, Sangma said it is the responsibility of these committees to act as they appoint the teachers.
“Funds are provided to the managing committees. We want improvement in the overall management of these schools with the enhancement of the grant-in-aid,” he said, adding that the managing committees will need to be accountable and maintain certain standards.
The chief minister also said the government provides a lump sum grant to private schools. “The private schools are doing their part but we will see how to improve the system,” he said.
On the delayed decision to enhance the salaries of the ad hoc teachers, he said the state government had planned to take up a lot of projects in the Community and Rural Development, Police and Education departments.
He said the government earmarked Rs 100 crore for new school buildings and another Rs 150 crore for improving the state-run lower primary schools.
“This is the reason why such decisions take time. Obviously, we wanted to come out with the best possible deal. As we move along, we will decide how to adjust the budget,” Sangma said.
