60 pc targeted households yet to get piped water: Data

SHILLONG, July 6: Almost three years have come to pass since the much-celebrated Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was unveiled to the country and yet, 60% of the targeted households in Meghalaya are yet to be provided with tap water connection, if government data are to be believed.
According to the dashboard of JJM, there are altogether 5.89 lakh households in the state, and prior to 2019, 4,550 households had tap water connection. As of today, 2.39 lakh households in the state have tap water connection, which translates to 40.66%.
As far as the progress of the project in villages is concerned, out of the 6,415 villages, only 1,457 have household tap connection, whereas water supply work is under progress in 2,359 villages.
Water supply work is yet to start in 2,599 villages.
According to the dashboard, the percentage of households with tap water supply in South West Garo Hills is 66.05%, East Garo Hills 65.88% and 52.40% in Ri-Bhoi districts. In other districts, the percentage of households with tap water supply is below 40 per cent.
The dashboard also states that 7,703 (58%) schools in the state have been provided with tap water supply, while 2,831 (62%) Anganwadi centres have also been provided with tap water connection.
However, all schools in West Khasi Hills have tap water supply and 89.29% of schools in East Garo Hills have tap water connection.
