SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT, July 9: In a major fillip ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, former UDP leader from Mawkyrwat Medal Singh Lyngdoh along with his scores of supporters on Saturday jumped ship to the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) during a meeting in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.
The new members were welcomed to the party by HSPDP central body president KP Pangniang in the presence HSPDP women’s wing central body president Badarity L Nonglait, among other members.
During the meeting, UDP Mawkyrwat area unit was also constituted and office-bearers for the same were also selected. Nolipstar Lyngdoh was elected as the president, Medal Singh Lyngdoh as the working president, Denis Wanniang as general secretary and Hadrian Lyngdoh as adviser.
Addressing the gathering, Pangniang expressed happiness that despite the UDP dealing a blow to the HSPDP recently by snaffling its party members, the new addition has breathed new lease of life to the party in Mawkyrwat.
Pangniang also claimed that the HSPDP will spring surprises during the Assembly elections next year.
During the meeting, Medal Singh Lyngdoh was also selected as the HSPDP candidate to contest from Mawkyrwat constituency next year.
Two new faces in Congress
Meanwhile, in Shillong, former KHADC member Neil Antonio War and former Umroi MDC Albinus Lyngdoh on Saturday joined the Congress during the East Shillong Block Congress Committee first Block Convention.
Airing happing after joining the party, War said, “Leaders will come and go but the Congress is here to stay.”
The programme was also attended by MPCC chief Vincent H Pala, MPCC working president PN Syiem, among others.
Pala, in his address, appealed to the party workers to work at grassroots level.
Maintaining that the Congress has the best candidates and MDCs, the MPCC chief said the party will win the elections next year and lead the government.
Informing that the party has a strategy in place, Pala said the party this time is working hard in Jaintia Hills, the region where Congress secured only one seat in 2018.
