SHILLONG, July 10: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council will examine the demand of the Dorbar Shnong Langkyrding Mihngi to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) to the Border Security Force for the acquisition of land for a shooting range in the villages falling under Raid Tynring in East Khasi Hills district.
The Dorbar Shnong Langkyrding Mihngi on Saturday had given a week’s deadline to the KHADC to issue the NOC.
The Dorbar Shnong also threatened to march to the council office if it fails to comply with their demand within the given deadline.
KHADC chief executive member, Titosstarwell Chyne on Sunday said the council will have to examine this matter. “It is a complex issue since there is opposition to the proposed land acquisition by the BSF. We will need to examine this matter properly,” he said.
The Rangbah Shnong of Langkyrding Mihngi, B Basaiawmoit at a meeting of the residents of the locality on Saturday said the council should not have a problem issuing the NOC to the BSF.
According to him, a week’s time is enough for the KHADC to take a decision on this matter.
“We will be compelled to march to the KHADC office if it fails to issue the NOC. I would urge the pressure groups to join hands if the Dorbar Shnong has to march to the council,” Basaiawmoit said.
The Rangbah Shnong further said the residents of the locality have faced great difficulties due to the shooting range of the BSF adjacent to the locality.
Earlier, Chyne said the landowners had given a power of attorney to a woman to initiate the process of land acquisition with the BSF.
“Both the landowners and the BSF have completed all the necessary procedures for acquiring the land. They have even received the NOC from the Raid Tynring and the Sordar of Raid Tynring,” Chyne said.
“The BSF will not be able to move ahead with this land acquisition unless it receives the NOC from the council,” he had said.
He also said the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner had asked the council in 2019 to give its consent to the proposed land acquisition.
The Khasi Students’ Union’s Eastern Border Area and Shillong Mihngi Circle had urged the KHADC chief not to give the NOC for the proposed land acquisition.
