Woman’s body recovered from NH-6; prime accused held

SHILLONG, July 22: A joint team of East Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Assam police personnel nabbed a man suspected of murdering a girl and dumping her body on National Highway 6 in East Jaintia Hills.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, said headman of Umtyra village Hunlang Bareh filed a complaint that the body of an unidentified female, aged about 30-35 years, was found inside a drain at a place called Um-Im at Umtyra village on NH-6.
Police conducted all formalities and shifted the body to Khliehriat community health centre for post-mortem. A case was also filed at Khliehriat women’s police station.
During the course of investigation, on Thursday, the body was identified as that of Grecia Bareh of Dkhiah East village in East Jaintia Hills. Following a hue and cry notice, police learnt that the deceased was seen with one Hedstar Dohtdong (42) of Pyrda village in West Khasi Hills on the eve of the crime.
The suspect was arrested on Friday from near the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Police said they have registered a murder case under section 302 IPC following a formal complaint by the brother of the deceased and more sections will be added based on the post-mortem report.
