Haaland scores in pre-season game against Bayern
Wisconsin, July 24: Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will need more time to begin firing on all cylinders, despite scoring on his pre-season debut in a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, manager Pep Guardiola said on Saturday. Haaland, who joined the Premier League champions on a five-year contract last month, got on the end of a Jack Grealish cross and fired home from close range after just 12 minutes to secure victory over the Bundesliga side at Lambeau Field. City begin their Premier League title defence with a trip to West Ham United on Aug 7. (Agencies)

Toronto FC hammer Charlotte 4-0 in MLS game
Toronto, July 24: Captain Michael Bradley scored twice to help Toronto FC beat Charlotte 4-0. Italians Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne made their MLS debuts, with Bernardeschi scoring an adding an assist and Insigne also setting up a goal. Mark-Anthony Kaye also scored for Toronto (6-12-4). Osorio opened the scoring in the fourth minute, Bradley scored in the 10th, Bernardeschi in the 31st and Bradley again in fist-half stoppage time. Bradley has 16 goals in 259 career MLS games. (AP)

India’s Jehan Daruvala finishes second in France F2 race
Le Castellet, July 24: Indian racer Jehan Daruvala scored his sixth podium of the season in the French round of the Formula 2 championship at the Paul Ricard track here on Sunday. Jehan started the Feature race from 10th on the grid. But he fought his way up to seventh, which put Jehan in the lead before his stops, and blistering speed after his late switch to fresh tyres, saw him climb up the order. Jehan’s second-place finish in France was his fifth this season. The 23-year-old, who races for Italian team Prema, was robbed of a potential fourth F2 victory by a post-race penalty in the last round in Austria. The Red Bull-backed racer will now head to Hungary. Mumbai City travel to Dubai for pre-season training
MUMBAI, July 24: As part of the team’s preparations for the 2022-23 season, Indian Super League (ISL) side Mumbai City FC’s squad along with the staff will travel to Dubai to take part in a pre-season training camp. Mumbai City FC players fly out to UAE and will set up base in Jebel Ali, Dubai in a 19-day training camp starting from July 25 until August 12. Des Buckingham’s Mumbai City ended the 2021-22 season creating history at the 2022 AFC Champions League, becoming the first Indian club to win a game in Asia’s premier club competition. The preparations will focus on getting the team ready for the 131st Durand Cup, set to begin on August 16. (IANS)

Atwal crashes out of 3M Open; Theegala, Chopra miss cut
BLAINE (US), July 24: India golfer Arjun Atwal crashed out of the 3M Open, while Indo-Swede Daniel Chopra and Indian-American Sahith Theegala also missed the cut here. Theegala shot 73-73, while Atwal carded 73-78 and Chopra was 78-73. Scott Piercy shot a five-under 66 on a wet day at TPC Twin Cities in the third round, that was delayed more than six and a half hours, to take a four-stroke lead into the final round. The 43-year-old had a painful blister on his right heel but he still moved to 18-under 195 total. He has four PGA TOUR victories. (PTI)
