Shillong, Aug 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the efforts of Meghalaya to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and recalled the valour of the hill state’s brave warrior U Tirot Sing during his 91st episode of Mann Ki Baat.

The PM expressed happiness in the way the Amrit Mahotsav took the form of mass movement across the country. Lauding the citizens for embracing the Mahotsav to mark the 75th year of India’s independence, the PM said, “One such event took place in Meghalaya earlier this month. People remembered the brave warrior of Meghalaya – U Tirot Singh, on his death anniversary. Tirot Singh ji fiercely opposed the British conspiracy to control the Khasi Hills and destroy the culture there”

He urged people to put the “tiranga” (‘tricolour’, the national flag) as their display pictures on social media profiles between August 2 and 15. In his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast, he flagged a movement called ’Har Ghar Tiranga’ (tricolour on every house) being organised from August 13 to 15. “Let us further this movement by hoisting the National Flag at our homes,” he said.

The drive is part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ (‘Pious Festival of Freedom’), which has been celebrated with several events and schemes in the lead-up to the 75th anniversary of Independence this year. The PMs said it’s turning into a mass movement.
