Symposium talks measures against floods, erosions in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Aug 5: A brainstorming session on Friday here has stressed that convergence of all line departments with multi-disciplinary approach and a collective responsibility of all stakeholders, particularly the rural community, is the need of the hour to tackle floods and erosions in Meghalaya.
According to a statement, the Regional Office for Meghalaya Brahmaputra Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti, in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Department of NIT, Meghalaya, organised a symposium on ‘Soft Measures for Flood & erosion control in Meghalaya’ under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which was moderated by The Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim.
During the symposium, experiences and perspectives were shared by the participants on the topic. Early flood warning system, bioengineering measures, beside other important aspects, were deliberated at length.
“The house expressed that these measures and suggestions be compiled for dissemination so that it reaches the government and the public for coordination and better understanding,” the statement said.
The brainstorming session was attended by departments of both central and state governments associated with the subject as well as members of civil societies.
