Lahiri lies fifth at rain-hit Wyndham Championship
Greensboro (US), Aug 7: India’s Anirban Lahiri still had seven holes to play in his third round as he lay tied fifth in the weather-hit Wyndham Championship here. Lahiri who carded 66-67 in his first two rounds was 3-under through 11 holes in the third when play ended early on the third day. Lahiri was 10-under after being 11-under and in shared lead at one stage. The Indian had four birdies in a span of five holes from fifth to ninth and turned in 4-under but dropped a shot on 11th, the result of a six-foot par miss. His overall game has once again been in great shape and at fifth and just two shots behind Korean star Sungjae Im, the Indian, now in his seventh year on the PGA Tour, is looking to get his first win. Chennai’s V Pranav becomes India’s 75th Grandmaster
Chennai, Aug 7: Chess prodigy V Pranav on Sunday became India’s 75th Grandmaster by winning a tournament in Romania. The Chennai-based Pranav won the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania to secure his third and final GM norm and attain the Grandmaster title. He finished the tournament with 7 points from nine rounds to wrap the GM norm requirements. “It is a great feeling. It will boost my confidence to improve further and reach the top level,” he told PTI from Baia Mare. The 15-year-old had obtained his maiden GM norm at the Serbia Open in 2021 and the second in the Vezerkepzo GM round-robin tourney in Budapest, Hungary in June. Pranav is the 27th Grandmaster from Tamil Nadu, a list which includes the legendary Viswanathan Anand and teen sensations D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa among others. (PTI)

Rogers to play Kasatkina in Silicon Valley Classic final
San Jose (US), Aug 7: Continuing her dominant week, Shelby Rogers set up a final clash with Daria Kasatkina at the Silicon Valley Classic after defeating Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal, here. It will be Rogers first final in six years when she faces Kasatkina on Sunday. A finalist in San Jose last year, Kasatkina booked her spot in the Championship with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No 4 Paula Badosa. The 29-year-old Rogers will be looking to finally break through to win her first career title. The American has been unstoppable this week, tallying wins over Bianca Andreescu, top seed Maria Sakkari, Amanda Anisimova, and Kudermetova without losing a set. She has not lost more than four games in any set she’s played. (IANS)
