SHILLONG, Aug 10: The state government will do all it can to ensure that the ‘prestigious’ Lady Keane College functions without any pressure from anybody, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui asserted on Wednesday.
Rymbui was reacting to the notice served by the Shillong Cantonment Board to the college asking it to pay Rs 45 lakh as ‘property tax’ since the institute is located on defence land.
Informing that the governing body of the college has not intimated the state government officially about the tax notice, Rymbui said he had spoken with the principal and inquired into the matter.
“The principal told me that such a thing had happened for the first time in the over 100-year-old history of the college,” Rymbui said, adding that the governing body will meet in the next couple of days to decide the future course of action.
Recently, senior BJP legislator AL Hek had asserted that he would personally take up the issue with Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh.
