SHILLONG, Aug 14: The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign may have fuelled patriotism for some and the political zeal for a few others. For the street vendors, it has ensured good business.
The sales of the Tricolour reached an all-time high with flags ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 100 having been sold every day by the roadsides.
“We always sell flags during Independence Day but the sales picked up much before the actual celebration this time,” Ravindar Prasad said while attending to a customer near the All Saints’ Cathedral. He said each vendor sold flags worth Rs 1,200-2,000 compared to less than Rs 800 on normal days. “I think this is all because of the Tiranga campaign and the love of the people for the country,” he added. Another seller, Ajit Rajak said, “I am very happy with the sales. I only thank the people for buying the flags.”
The city streets, government buildings, Governor’s house and public places such as Wards Lake have been decked up with the Tricolour. Private houses and shops along the streets have also donned the National Flag.
Earlier during the day, senior BJP legislator A.L. Hek was seen going door to door in his constituency distributing the Tricolour.
‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is a campaign under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to encourage people to bring the Tricolour home and hoist it to mark the 75th year of India’s independence.
