SHILLONG, Aug 21: In a freak act of nature, one person died while two of his friends suffered injuries when they were struck by lightning after taking shelter under a tree at Golf Links to escape a heavy downpour on Sunday afternoon.
Police said they received information at around 3.45 pm on Sunday that three persons were found lying unconscious after being struck by lightning at Golf Links. They were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital, where Dinesh Nonglang (37) of Mawlai Umjaiur was declared dead.
Police said the trio was playing football when heavy rainfall lashed the city forcing them to take shelter under a pine tree when the lightning struck.
