SHILLONG, Aug 22: Members of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Monday shut down a godown near Mahavira Park in Jhalupara, Shillong, for functioning without a trading license.
The godown was reportedly being run by non-local traders at a public toilet.
The FKJGP central body, accompanied by its circles from Mawprem, Mawkhar and Malki, found that the public toilet donated by the Rotary Club was allotted to former Mawhati MDC James Sylliang but the place failed to serve its purpose as it was turned into a godown run by two people, whose trading and labour licenses were reportedly found to be invalid.
Questioning the silence of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), FKJGP assistant general secretary Reginald Thabah said, “The two non-locals who have turned the place into a godown do not have any documents. We found that they did not have the trading licence from the Shillong Cantonment Board.”
He also questioned as to why MUDA allowed Sylliang to give the place on rent for a godown when the place was meant for a public toilet.
The FKJGP has, meanwhile, closed down the godown and stated that it will be allowed to open only after the duo obtains the trading license and other necessary documents.
