SHILLONG, Aug 25: It is time for people of Pynthorumkhrah constituency to walk a different road, said National People’s Party national president and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as he urged the electorates of the constituency to pick a new leader and pave the way for development, which, according to him, is missing.
Speaking at a programme in Pynthorumkhrah where BJP MLA from the constituency AL Hek’s nephew, Rocky Hek officially joined the NPP on Thursday, the NPP chief said, “It is time to pick a new road. You have walked the same road for years but your trust has not been fulfilled. It’s time to walk on a new road, pick a new leader who has shown his capability to you. Join along with such a political party that has taken Meghalaya to new economic road.”
“It is time to pick a new road and that is through Rocky Hek,” he added.
With Rocky Hek’s formal joining, the NPP chief announced the former’s candidature for the 2023 assembly polls from Pynthorumkhrah constituency.
The 37-year-old politician will be contesting the polls against his uncle, AL Hek, who has consecutively served five terms and has remained undisputed.
Maintaining that he does not believe in criticising others, the NPP president said, “In this constituency, in the last 20-25 years, lots of work that should have been completed was not done. Even after the representative being in power and remaining in different positions, the citizens did not get the development they deserved.”
He claimed that the development needed is missing.
Bringing to the attention of the gathering how politics in Meghalaya has charged in the last four-and-half years, Sangma said the MDA Government has strived for all-round development in the state while addressing important issues and finding solutions, which have earned the citizens’ trust.
“NPP is the only way and no other party can do it,” he said, while reiterating that the NPP will get the single-largest majority in 2023.
On the sidelines, the chief minister also announced sanctions for Lumshyiap football ground and an ambulance for Golf Links community hall, while also making a mention of taking up Langkyrding and Nongmensong road projects besides water and streetlight problems.
Talking to newsmen, Rocky said, “Drugs, unemployment and youth related issues will be his top priority in the list of issues that have to be addressed.”
“I don’t want to talk about the past 25 years, but for the coming five years, I am the son of this constituency and a genuine candidate. I would look into all the issues of the people of the constituency,” he said.
