SHILLONG, Aug 29: A five-member team of the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IITG) which conducted an audit of the under-construction Assembly building at New Shillong Township has submitted its report to the Public Works Department.
A senior government official told The Shillong Times on Monday that officials of the PWD (Buildings) are studying the report. “The report will be submitted to the state government and the high-powered committee once the PWD officials finish examining the report,” a senior official said.
While the full content of the report was not known, a government source said that the IITG audit team has pointed out several factors that led to the collapse of the 70-tonne central dome atop the Assembly building on May 22.
According to the official, Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Limited — which is implementing the project — will compensate for the damages caused to the building.
The official, however, made it clear that the building was safe since the dome did not cause any extensive damage to the left and right wings of the building apart from minor cracks.
