MAWKYRWAT, Sep 3: The state government on Saturday announced the upgrade of Sngap Syiem College at Mawkyrwat, the lone college in South West Khasi Hills, stating that the youths of the district should not be deprived of quality education.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who participated in the Graduation Day 2022 of the Sngap Syiem College as the chief guest, said that the college will soon be designated as the “People’s College” or “Community College”, which is a gift to the people of the district as part of 50th Statehood Day celebrations.
The programme was also attended by Additional District Magistrate JU Kharpuri as the guest of honour, Sngap Syiem College principal Dr. KK Nongsiej, Rambrai MDC Bajop Pyngrop, teachers, students, et al.
In his address, the deputy chief minister informed that the state government will issue a notification before the end of November for the upgrade of the college.
“I have taken the decision to come here to deliver this message because I understand how you felt when despite expectations of getting a community college, it never happened,” Tynsong said.
Tynsong said that it is not easy for the people of South West Khasi Hills, especially the ones coming from poor families, to go to Shillong for education.
Therefore, the upgrade of this college will ease the burden of both the parents and youths, he added.
Meanwhile, the college principal submitted a memorandum to the deputy chief minister, asking the latter to revamp the college infrastructure, including a link road from Mawten Presbyterian Church junction to Siej Lyngdoh, which is the college campus.
He informed that the college has started the construction of minor infrastructures at the new campus of Sngap Syiem College at Mawten village.
