JOWAI, Sep 4: The dilapidated condition of the PWD road linking several villages under Mowkaiaw and Nartiang in West Jaintia Hills has riled villagers and the village authorities.
Villagers from Shilliang Myntang, Thangrain, Khliehsniriang, Bhain, Thadsning, Samatan, Thadialong, Lummuriap, Mobandu, Lathymphu, Umsalang, Musiaw, Thadbamon, Sookhlieh under Mowkaiaw constituency and villagers from Nongjngi under Raliang constituency besides Mynkrem, Khliehriat, Saphohwaiong, longsnieh and Madansynrang villages under Nartiang constituency have pinned the blame on the state government for its lackadaisical attitude towards these villages, which continue to deprived of proper road infrastructure and other development activities.
Shilliang Myntang headmen Beristar Lamare, Thadialong headmen Wipi Situng and Thadsning headmen Khiat Litep informed that the locals continue to suffer due to the dilapidated road condition.
“If one starts from Thangrain village in order to reach Nartiang village, it will take many hours to cover the distance of about 25 km approximately,” Lamare said, adding that even an expectant woman gave birth half way before reaching the nearest Nartiang Community Health Centre.
“The entire stretch of the road is so bad and it is very difficult for the farmers to take their agricultural produce to the near market at Nartiang or to any other market in the district,” Situng said.
According to these headmen, the road was constructed decades ago during the tenure of Kyrmen Sungi, the then local MLA and PWD minister.
Since then, the road was left unattended without any repair work.
Meanwhile, the headmen have appealed to the state government to ensure that the renovation of the road takes place.
