SHILLONG, Sep 10: Reminiscing about the contributions of bygone leaders and their euphoric past, the United Democratic Party (UDP), on Saturday, rallied its rank and file to grasp the much-awaited political future which seems to be almost within reach after the party’s journey of 25 years.
Rallying its comrades to the beat of the drum (which is the symbol of the party) and ‘Hoi Kiew’ as it celebrated its 25th Foundation Day at the party office, which was inaugurated on Saturday, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh remembered the history of the party and the instances that led to the formation of the regional fronts and the UDP as well.
Holding the past leaders in high esteem for their courage and grit, the UDP president credited them for the existence of the regional party in the state’s political spectrum.
Diving into the present-day context, Lyngdoh said that the party has come a long way and grown, especially due to the contribution of the strong team, and no individual should or can take credit for it.
Stating that there is clamour for the UDP on the ground, the party chief said how UDP responds to the people’s call and aspiration is of utmost importance.
He maintained that the people are not foolish but innocent, and that more often than not they are taken advantage of, while assuring that the UDP will continue to listen to the voice of the people.
With regard to the upcoming 2023 polls, he said the party will win more than the magical number of 31 in the House of 60.
Sharing his thoughts on the foundation day, UDP vice president Allantry F Dkhar said, “I am overjoyed. It took 25 years for us to have an office like this. Big thanks to the current president not discounting the works of the past presidents who have laid the foundation for us to achieve this milestone”.
Dkhar called it a new beginning, while also endorsing Metbah’s claims on the support to the UDP from the people.
He further said, “From today onwards, we are rededicating ourselves to the principle values of the party represented by the color of its flag. Red — sacrifice, valor and bravery; white — peace, prosperity; and green — growth. We performed our role in such a manner that we have no other way but to grow and achieve greater heights together with the people of the state.”
Even UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh hailed the party, and was optimistic about the party creating history in 2023.
UDP leader Lahkmen Rymbui, who is also the Home Minister, was also hopeful of better performance in the 2023 polls.
Another UDP leader and KHADC Chief Executive Member Titosstarwell Chyne appealed to people to join UDP and termed it a big day for the party.
