The advent
Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind…
So wrote Shakespeare in As You Like It.

Winter is here, and a tad too early. Shillongites experienced quite a strange weather this past week. Intermittent showers followed by bright sunlight through the day but the slight chill in the air in the late night is unmistakable. The showers have definitely extended an early invitation to the signature winter season.
The long and extended festive season beginning from October is also a telltale sign that winter is near.
Take a casual walk across the city street and you can spot some residents already wearing jackets and winter wear in the early as well as the late hours of the day.
The weatherman has already predicted rainfall in most of the remaining days of September and as many as 15-22 rainy days in October. It is but a mere guess that the mercury will witness a further dip in the coming days.
The weather forecast is likely to play spoilsport to merrymakers during the Durga Puja festival scheduled for the first week of October – rainfall with low mercury readings is a tough match for anybody.
So keep your bumbershoots and your woollens ready and get ready for the festivities ahead.

Only for show? The solar-powered streetlights along the Khyndai Lad road, opposite the yet to be inaugurated Crowborough Hotel cease to work on Saturday. (ST)
