SHILLONG, Sep 20: A series of operations by Meghalaya Police has resulted in fruition with the arrest of the mastermind involved in several two-wheeler thefts reported in and around Shillong and two of his accomplices.
The main accused was arrested from Nongsohma village under Eastern West Khasi Hills on September 18, according to police.
His location was tracked after police arrested two persons at Mairang recently after being tipped-off that a bike, which was stolen on September 9 from Laitsohpliah village in Sohra, was spotted near Mairang.
The duo revealed that most of the two-wheelers were stolen from Shillong by the mastermind from Nongsohma. The main accused has reportedly admitted to being involved in most of the two-wheeler theft cases.
On his revelation, the police team recovered a scooty and two bikes on the night of September 18.
On September 19 morning, the police team from Sohra Police Station and a Special Cell team from Shillong recovered 11 more stolen motorcycles from Nongsohma village.
A garage where stolen bikes are modified and registration number plates are replaced with fake ones was also raided at Nongkrem locality under Nongsohma village.
A total of 15 motorcycles and a scooty have been recovered so far while three persons have been arrested.
Police informed that investigation is under way to ascertain the involvement of others in the several bike theft cases.
